Ryan’s teaching philosophy uses traditional methods of education and puts pupils into direct dialogue with the great thinkers of the past. While recognising the need for students to excel at exams–particularly at GCSE and A-Level, Ryan maintains that pupils who cultivate a love of reading, learn to write well, develop an inquisitive mind, and interact with other inquisitive minds (past and present) will naturally excel at exams. Consequently, while Ryan uses GCSE and A-Level curricula as a starting point and teaches analytical and writing skills directly targeted to help students succeed; his main focus is on the education of the whole student.
This means that students will interact with key texts which are foundational to Western and British development, develop strong oral and written skills, and follow a curriculum which complements the modern exigencies with more traditional and classical supplements.
Finally, Ryan is a firm believer that education is about cultivating the character to recognise and love the good and pursue the ‘good life’. This means that students will be asked to use the knowledge they gain in lessons to analyse and form opinions around key questions, topics, and themes–some of which they will supply themselves.
